Why is Digital and Social Media Marketing important today?

The world is getting more and more digitalized. The Digital and Social Media Marketing course on the iversity platform is a perfect way to learn more about this topic. When going through chapter 1, I discovered lots of interesting points. I would like to share my top 5 points with you which are:

1. Diversity of participants

When starting to work on the course material and having a first look into Twitter comments, I was surprised that there are so many participants from so many countries and continents. I am sure that we will have lots of possibilities to learn from each other with heterogenious background, our different points of view and from our different experiences.

2. Simultaneous use of digital media

When going through the additional material about the ZMOT (chapter 1.5), I was surprised to read that so many people use TV and smartphone simultaneously. This shows the importance of consistency when presenting a brand on different channels.

3. Willingness of customers to talk about good vs. negative experiences

I was surprised to hear that people are much more willing to talk about good experiences than about negative experiences which Prof. David J. Reibstein points out. This offers lots of opportunities for organizations and should encourage them to actively ask for feedback. My experience shows that lots of organizations are reluctant with asking for feedback because they are afraid that feedback might be negative and could have a negative effect on their image. In contrast to that, research introduced by Prof. Reibstein shows that feedback has a lot of potential to have positive effects.

Models can give a lot of structure when planning next steps. Therefore I found the introduction to the SWOT analysis as well as the introduction to the „Digital Business Maturity Model“ very interesting. So point 4 and 5 are as follows:

4. SWOT analysis

I was introduced to the SWOT analysis during my studies some years ago. Therefore the chapter about the SWOT analysis was a good repetition for me and reminded me that this is a good tool for the planning process.

5. Digital Business Maturity Model

The “Digital Business Maturity Model“ was completely new for me. I was introduced to it during the Digital Marketing course for the first time. It is a very interesting and useful model for an organization in order to check at which level the organisation is currently located and what the next steps should be in order to achieve the desired level
